Four Second Form pupils travelled to the University of Leicester to participate in the Midlands regional Salters’ Festival of Chemistry competition. After a short welcome the pupils were taken into one of the university’s teaching labs to perform a ‘Who Dunnit’ style investigation using their analytical powers of deduction as well as some translation of Greek.
The afternoon saw them compete in a problem solving event where they were asked to place five unlabelled solutions are varying density in order using only a limited amount of equipment – drinking straws were the key to success here. Despite not achieving a top three place in either competition, the four pupils - Amalie Holtby (B), Benjamin Barnes (L), Joseph White (L) and Thomas Caskey (L) – all had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
